Client: Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR)
TMR completed an initial investigation of Transit Malls for the Commonwealth Game. Transit Malls are significant public transport stations or interchanges that are integrated with the surrounding streets. For the Commonwealth Games, these Transit Malls will support the movement of the Games Family, athletes, spectators, journalists and broadcasters with bus services. Transit Malls are intended to be located at Southport for spectators in support of the Southport Venue Cluster, the Athlete’s Village at Parklands to provide secure transport to and from the venues for athletes and their coaches and, Broadbeach to support the Media and Broadcast Centre. Other locations are also being considered and if investigations are to be carried out will be subsequent stages to the current work. The primary task of this project was to refine the preliminary design of the selected Transit Malls and to identify the land area required, aiming to deliver feasible designs within the timeframe.
MWH carried out works for 3 stages.
Stage 1: Detailed investigations of the three Transit Mall sites already identified to ensure the preliminary design was adequate to deal with key capacity elements, prepared amended designs, and preliminary network designs.
Stage 2:Tested the amended designs and preliminary network designs with the “Commonwealth Games Strategic Model” and micro-simulation to demonstrate the effectiveness of the recommended designs, prepare a program of works, and cost estimates, to deliver the designs for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Stage 3: Carried out investigations of other Transit Mall locations and provided technical support with stakeholder consultation and preparation of documentation to support alternative options.
