Beginning in 2002, this project focused on the demonstration of the suitability of membrane filtration and ozonation in a tertiary wastewater treatment application for water disinfection. MWH completed the design in 2008. The initial demonstration phase treated 30 mgd of secondary effluent on an annual average basis, with expandability to 150 mgd ultimate capacity. The treatment scheme consists of chemical coagulation via rapid mixing, fine screening utilizing submerged rotating drum screens, membrane filtration and ozone disinfection. The ozone system in the initial demonstration phase will utilize liquid oxygen for ozone generation, supplemented by a nitrogen boost system to enhance the efficiency of the ozone generators.
