The Seychelles Integrated Comprehensive Sanitation Master Plan (ICSMP) intends to promote innovative and alternative approaches to sanitation within the general framework of the urban planning on the three main islands of the archipelago Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. The ICSMP focus on sanitation systems and ensure optimization links with other sectors through an integrated approach.

    Location: Seychelles
    Region: Europe-Africa
    Market Sector: Water & Wastewater
    Client: African Development Bank
    Status: Ongoing

    In particular the project will optimize connections with water supply by considering the impact of using reclaimed water for drinking water; supply, irrigation, process water in households or for industrial use and groundwater recharge, and developing demand side measures, conservation measures, and rainwater harvesting; energy supply and solid waste by maximizing synergies with the planned waste to energy initiative (renewable energy potential of wastewater and sludge), evaluating existing and planned sanitation systems’ energy demand and assessing effects of water reuse on the water supply systems’ energy demand; stormwater management through assessing the impact of floods on the sanitation infrastructure and analyzing the interest of promoting rainwater harvesting measures and groundwater recharge; agriculture by analyzing the impact of reclaimed water and recycled sludge on productivity and production costs.

    Land use planning and climate change are two important aspects embedded in the development of the ICSM Plan.

    The project is the base for the realization of highly innovative sanitation solutions with multi-sectoral benefits, with two main long-term impacts: the improvement of the Seychelles environment and the improvement of health and sanitary conditions at the targeted islands.

    The services included for the Seychelles ICSMP are:

    • A comprehensive diagnosis of the current situation in the Seychelles which shall entail an assessment of the existing sanitation status and also other aspects, directly and indirectly linked to the implementation of an integrated approach to a sanitation master plan.
    • Development and comparison of scenarios relevant to the implementation of an Integrated and Comprehensive Sanitation Master Plan taking into consideration the findings of the diagnosis and also the projections for the future. Comparisons of scenarios should be based on a 25 year planning horizon and be undertaken in a comprehensive manner.
    • Preparation of the Integrated and Comprehensive Sanitation Master Plan for a period of 10 years based on the Master scenario selected to be adopted. Additionally, preliminary designs, project prioritization and preparation of investment plans shall also be undertaken to finalize the road map as a guide for the implementation of the Master Plan for a 10 year period.

    The activities carried out in this project are structured as follows:

    • Collection, review and analysis of baseline data;
    • Development of Sanitation Scenarios;
    • Evaluation of Sanitation Scenarios;
    • Decision on Master-Scenario;
    • Preparation of Master Plan and implementation projects.
