Award-Winning Energy Solution for Fiji
MWH provided detailed design, equipment procurement, construction supervision and commissioning services for the 6.5 MW Wainikasou Hydroelectric Power Scheme, Fiji’s first renewable energy development in 25 years.

    Location: Viti Levu, Fiji
    Region: Asia Pacific
    Market Sector: Energy & Power
    Status: Complete

The project was constructed in the remote highlands of Vitu Levu. This area is 30 kilometers from the nearest village or permanent power supply, with access to telephone or internet facilities requiring a day’s travel. The site was located at an altitude of about 1,000 meters.

The new scheme utilizes an existing water diversion weir. Improvements consisted of installation of an inflatable “Obermeyer” gate on the Wainisavaulevu weir, providing additional storage fo capture and utilize runoff from heavy tropical rain showers, allowing turbines to operate at peak efficiency. The 6.5 MW power station consists of two horizontal Francis turbine generators. A 30 kilometer-long 33kV transmission line connects to the Fiji Electricity Authority substation.

MWH work on the project was awarded a New Zealand Engineering Excellence Award in 2007. The project won in the Electrical and Systems section, with the judges commending MWH for achieving an excellent project in trying conditions.

    • Detailed Design
    • Equipment Procurement
    • Construction Supervision
    • Commissioning Services
    • The original design solution provided by MWH allowed project costs to come in under budget.
    • Wainikasou now provides around 4 percent of Fiji’s energy needs.
    • The facility has reduced fuel use by about 15 percent, or 11,986 tons of CO2 per year, by replacing the expensive and polluting diesel generators that previously provided power supplies in this remote area.
    • The Wainikasou project was one of the first worldwide to achieve Clean Development Mechanism certification under the Kyoto Protocol.
